Traffic and getting around Montgomery

Residents told the master plan consultant that getting around Montgomery without a car is their top concern. The Route 206/518 loop roads opened in August 2026, but the planned ban on left turns from Route 206 onto Route 518 has no start date. The township has one bus line, a $3 million grant for a path along Route 206, and transportation survey results it has not yet presented.

What happens next

The Township Committee lists a "Transportation Survey Results" presentation as a future agenda item, with no date. The master plan reexamination draft, which the consultant said will recommend a connected bike and pedestrian network, is due in early November 2026. No start date for the Route 206/518 left-turn restriction has been announced.

This issue tracks how people get around Montgomery: the Route 206 corridor, county roads, walking and biking paths, transit and road safety. At the Planning Board on October 12, 2026, the master plan consultant said “the number one concern” residents raised “is related to mobility” (timeline).

Route 206 and Route 518. Developer-built loop roads around the intersection are all open. The last three were scheduled to open on August 7 and 10, 2026, and by September 3 the township was collecting feedback on the roads “that recently opened.” The township has said drivers will no longer be able to turn left from Route 206 onto Route 518. Its August 4 notice said that restriction “will not be implemented immediately” and that its timing “will be provided at a later date.” Nothing newer has been posted. Turn rules on Route 206, a state highway, are set by the state Department of Transportation. No state order for this intersection has been published.

Other work. The township holds a $3 million state grant for a path along the west side of Route 206 from Orchard Road to Village Drive, now in concept design. It is also designing the Orchard Road reconstruction. The state’s current transportation capital program lists two bridge replacements in Montgomery and no Route 206 project.

Transit. Officials say the township has one public transit line, the NJ Transit 605 bus. A township transportation survey drew almost 600 participants; 92 percent of respondents who use county paratransit reported problems. The full results have not been presented.

What residents can do. Report signal and signage problems on Route 206 to the state and on county roads to Somerset County. Watch Township Committee agendas for the survey presentation and for any resolution about Route 206 turn rules. Comment on the master plan draft when it is released. Details are in the explainer.

Meetings

  • Planning Board — October 12, 2026

A half-hour meeting. The Board adopted the township's new Comprehensive Municipal Farmland Preservation Plan without questions, then heard the Plan4Health consultant's status report on the 2026 Master Plan reexamination: a draft is due at the beginning of November, and everything must be adopted by March 2027 under the grant. The Kenvue site stayed on the future-agenda list with no date.

  • Township Committee — August 6, 2026

At the Committee's request, the police department presented its Flock Safety license-plate camera program: six fixed cameras and one movable one, about $25,000 a year, data kept three years under Attorney General policy and shared only with New Jersey agencies. Members asked about misuse, retention, storage and the 252,000 plates read in 30 days. No vote was taken.

  • Township Committee — June 18, 2026

The Committee adopted Ordinance #26-1779, which prohibits data centers and detention centers everywhere in Montgomery Township, by a 4-0 roll call after a public hearing at which a lawyer and a partner for E. Kahn Development asked them to table it. The same meeting opened with Deputy Mayor Vince Barragan's resignation and closed, after an executive session on the affordable housing litigation, with an added resolution approving a Fourth Round settlement agreement with Fair Share Housing Center.

  • Planning Board — June 8, 2026

A 40-minute meeting whose single consequential act was a 9-0 recommendation that the Township Committee adopt Ordinance #26-1779, the townwide ban on data centers and detention centers. The minutes record that "the Board found the ordinance to be consistent with the Master Plan" — the finding that reporting on E. Kahn Development's lawsuit says was never documented. The Board then went into closed session on the developer's separate suit against it.
